Tampa Bay Area Volkswagen dealers and the Tampa Bay Lightning are teaming up to bring the Lightning Concert Series presented by Volkswagen to the St. Pete Times Forum this season. The concert series kicks off Wednesday, November 24 when the Tampa Bay Lightning take on the New York Rangers with a post-game performance by legendary hip-hop artist, MC Hammer. The Lightning Concert Series presented by Volkswagen is free with the purchase of a Lightning game ticket.
Born Stanley Kirk Burrell in Oakland, California in 1962, MC Hammer is an immensely popular recording artist who synthesized the street sounds of African-American and pop culture. MC Hammer made his first break on the 1987 album Feel My Power. Hammer's Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em album solidified his appeal with more than 20 million copies sold worldwide. Massive exposure and sponsorship deals followed with Mattel, Toshiba, Taco Bell, KFC and Pepsi-Cola, turning Hammer into an international household name.
Hammer's single "U Can't Touch This" remained in the US/UK Top 5 and held the number one spot on the Billboard charts for a record-breaking 23 weeks. In 1993, Too Legit to Quit was released, featuring the triple platinum single and soundtrack hit "Addams Groove" and the explosive selling title track, "Too Legit To Quit." A multitude of awards followed, including three Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, The People’s Choice Award, Image Award and the prestigious Billboard "Diamond Award." Hammer is a co-founder of the social media destination Dancejam and executive producer and creator of "HammerTime," a new Real Life Family show on the A&E network.
The Lightning Concert Series began in 2006 and has been a huge hit, attracting fans to enjoy additional entertainment after watching exciting Lightning hockey. Other concert series performers will be announced throughout the season. Concert series dates include November 24, November 27, December 4, December 18, January 1, February 12, February 19, March 5 and March 11.
